Mljet is the greenest and most beautiful island in the Adriatic Sea. It is the 1st large island as you travel from the southeast to northwest. It is covered by lush Mediterranean vegetation, featuring Allepo pine trees. The sea is crystal clear and the sea live is abundant and diverse.
Mljet is 37 kilometers long and the average width of the island is 3 kilometers. It is the 8th largest island in the Adriatic. It belongs to the Mediterranean climatic region, which features dry, sunny and hot summers as well as mild winters. There are 17 towns in Mljet, 6 of which are in the National Park area. The National Park contains 2 lakes- large and small. An islet called St. Maria is located on the large lake. Once a center of the Benedictine order, it still features a beautifully preserved 12th century Benedictine monastery. There are around 800 permanent residents on Mljet.
